The potholes, cracked sidewalks and
broken curbing are fast disappearing along Munroe Street
in the heart of the city’s central business district.
When the major improvement project is done, the commercial
corridor will have new sidewalks or brickwork, repaved
street surfaces, and decorative antique streetlamps.
Munroe Street is the last of the
downtown streets to benefit from the city’s gentrification
plan, which replaced more urban light poles with decorative
street lamps, and industrial-looking sidewalks with brick
walkways.
City Development Director Hal McGaughey
said the bidding process briefly stalled the $800,000 improvement
project on Munroe Street.

However,
now that work has begun, the job should be done by the
end of summer, he said.
In addition to new sidewalks and lighting,
the street will be repaved.
Munroe Street is currently clogged with
heavy construction equipment, barrels and other obstacles
to automotive traffic.
Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce Executive
Director Kevin Donahue said Munroe Street merchants are
excited by the aesthetic improvements. |
