Editorial/The Daily Item
As we draw closer to summer's unofficial
end, Labor Day, Lynn residents have plenty of cause to
take pride in, and indeed rediscover, their own city.
A daily newspaper is often described as
a mirror on the community, and this week that mirror is
gleaming in the pages of The Daily Item, with the huge
success of the Third Thursdays celebrations in Central
Square; scores taking advantage of free tours of the visiting
tall ship Friendship - a harbinger of what's to come with
the advancing Waterfront Master Plan; and Ford School students
preparing for their exclusive chat Sunday morning with
astronauts aboard the International Space Station.
We would be remiss if we didn't mention
that all of this activity comes on the heels of the Lynn
Babe Ruth 14s and Wyoma Softball teams capturing their
respective state championships.
Residents and young people in particular
should note all of the good happening in this city - and
spread the word.
In a diverse urban community of this size,
there will always be those days when the mirror is less
than flattering. City police, on that point, have had great
success in recent months investigating violent crime. One
way to help quell violence would be for he city's youth
to share in the growing sense of community pride.
Visit the Boys and Girls Club, Girls Inc.,
Raw Arts, Lynn Arts, the Lynn Museum, Lynn Woods, downtown
shops and restaurants; take in a North Shore Spirit Game
at the new Fraser Field or a scheduled show at the new
Veterans Memorial Auditorium at City Hall; or simply walk
along Lynn Shore Drive and enjoy the picturesque ocean
view.
It is truly a time of rediscovery here
- and of redemption; a time for city residents, when asked,
to not just answer, but boast: "I'm from Lynn."
