John Moore has a plan to change the perception
of downtown Lynn - not just to those beyond Lynn's borders,
but those within it as well.
His new restaurant the Downtown Bistro
and Wine Bar is snuggly tucked into its 191 Oxford Street
address. The food is freshly prepared and can be classified
as New American with an international twist. "There are
some Latin and Asian influences in there," Moore says,
"but, mainly, it is a New American flavor."
Moore, who also owns and operates the Navy
Yard Bisto in Charlestown, is operating this restaurant
with high hopes. "I want people to have a reason to come
back to the downtown. People who live in Ward 1 are people
that maybe never venture downtown, and this should give
them a reason," he says.
If the Downtown Bistro is a success, Moore
says additional restaurants may be on the horizon. "I would
love to open another one, maybe and Italian restaurant
in Lynn," he said.
Moore, who is a Lynn and Nahant native,
understands the struggle he may be up against. "When people
heard I wanted to open in Lynn, they told me I was crazy,"
he says. "But I know that there is a need for good food
in Lynn, and we want to be the place that offers that."
The Bistro, however, isn't what you think
it is. There is no dress code, reservations aren't required
and the prices aren't exorbitant. "When people see the
word 'Bistro,' they thin fancy," he says. "Not the case,
Bistro means casual," he ads, and that's his aim - a casual
dining experience, with a twist of flair, sprinkled with
great food in a classic setting.
It's something Lynn needs and deserves.
The former salesman-turned-cook-turned=restaurant
entrepreneur is, indeed, trying to change perception with
his new establishment. "When people think Lynn, they think
'Lynn, Lynn, city of sin' and I say let's change that to
sinfully good food," Moore says with a smile.
Zagat has rated the Navy Yard Bistro excellent
in just about every category, and there is no doubt the
Downtown Bistro in Lynn is also heading in that direction.

John Moore stand outside the Downtown Bistro and Wine Bar
in Lynn. The restaurant is a glowing example of the downtown's
turnaround.
